J.J. Christy was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio. After dabbling in physics, mathematics, and astronomy for almost four years at the University of Toledo in hopes of being an astrophysicist, he threw up his hands and gave his soul to the communications department. His first fulltime job began in his hometown in October, 1977. Over the years, he slowly made his way westward until fate landed him in Reno. His first day on-air was Monday, September 21, 1987 – not quite six months after KBUL-FM went on-air. To put things into perspective, Ronald Reagan was president, “Dirty Dancing” was the big movie, and Hank Junior’s “Born To Boogie” was the song everyone was swing dancing to. “The Simpsons” wasn’t yet a sitcom and Garth Brooks, Toby Keith, Kenny Chesney, and Tim McGraw wouldn’t chart a radio single for a couple more years. In that time, he has interviewed just about everyone on up beginning with Conway Twitty.
Going on 38 years now, he has become an institution of sorts. He has always been aware how fortunate he has been to be able have a long, storied career in Northern Nevada which in turn afforded him the chance to put down roots and raise his daughter. He made it a point to
show his appreciation by giving back to the community. Either through the Bull or on his own, he has helped raise millions of dollars for local causes, both big and small. He has also sat on his share of public service boards.
